Equal Opportunity & Affirmative Action

2009 Lillian H. Williams Award Recipients

The Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action is pleased to announce the winners of the 2009 Lillian H. Williams Award. Juan Moreno, Diversity and Inclusion Specialist in the University of Minnesota Extension Service, and the staff of the Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC), a division of the Academic Health Center, were presented with the Williams Awards at the annual EOAA Liaisons Conference held on Mary 14, 2009.

Juan Moreno's work has contributed to University of Minnesota Extension becoming a national leader in diversity and inclusion, and the first extension service in the nation to have "Diversity and Inclusion" as an area of expertise. His professional activities and publications focus on defining and righting social and cultural imbalances for minority and underserved populations. Prior to joining Extension, Juan was the founder of the Diversity Institute at the University of Minnesota, which he also directed for four years. The only organization of its kind in the country at that time, the Institute promoted the multicultural development of students, faculty, and staff. The Community-University Health Care Center (CUHCC) was founded in 1966 to provide primary care services to low-income families in South Minneapolis. CUHCC's commitment to diversity is evident in its culturally competent care, its service to diverse populations, and its own diversity as a unit -- appromaximately fifty percent of CUHCC's staff are people of color, immigrants, or refugees. The CUHCC staff offers a breadth and depth of healthcare and outreach services that foster equity and combat the history of disparate treatment of its 10,000 patients and surrounding community members.
